Great find. The RFID brewer is for commercial users where the customer may be unfamiliar with the machine and not know which selections to make for an optimal brew. The RFID chip will automatically select the optimal size, temperature, etc for the vcup.
Now to find a patent application for the RIVO brewer.

The RFID topic came up on the other board a few months ago. I posted some comments on how it could play with their brewer patents at that time.
http://messages.finance.yahoo.com/Busine....91827&mid=91848

Excerpt:
The most interesting thing about this is how it plays with the patents. As has been discussed on this board many times, while two of GMCR's K-Cup patents expire this year, the patents protecting the brewers are good past 2020.

So here is the scenario:

1) GMCR starts building K-Cups with RFID tags embedded. These are the same size as current K-Cups, and will brew in either existing machines (without RFID readers) or in the new RFID-enabled machines.

2) A few months later, GMCR starts building brewers with the RFID reader, which won't brew K-Cups that don't have the RFID chips. GMCR discontinues production of the non-RFID-enabled brewers. GMCR doesn't make public the RFID code format, or simply copyrights the codes needed to allow the brewing cycle to activate.

Suddenly, the Keurig monopoly on K-Cups gets a boost for almost another decade. This September, when competitors can build their own unlicensed K-Cups, they will be faced with the fact that the brewers being sold require the RFID tags, and they can't legally produce compatible K-Cups. And they can't build their own brewers because of the numerous and broad-ranging patents protecting the Keurig machines.

No company is going to invest in these expensive packaging lines that produce K-Cups that can only be brewed in an orphaned product line.

gnorsk,

Your scenario makes total sense. I'm kinda surprised they didn't do this with the Vue from the get-go. I do know they were citing added cost to the new brewer as a reason. Maybe it was important to get as many converts to the Vue as quickly as possible. They can then do your scenario with the Vue at any point in the future - they have plenty of time with the whole new set of patents.

It never occurred to me (apparently I didn't grok gnorsk's earlier post of this scenario) that the RFID technology would be applied to K-Cups; I always figured it was V-Cups only (in fact, I was shocked that the 1st-gen Vue brewer and V-Cups didn't employ RFID).

But boy does this idea make a lot of sense. I think an important factor is going to be cost: just how much more expensive to produce are RFID-equipped K-Cups (not to mention V-Cups) going to be? And if that cost is passed along to the consumer, is it going to put a damper on the adoption curve for Keurig products in general?

The game's afoot...

Again GMCR/Keurig is pushing the innovation barriers...here's an article just published from someone who attended the RFID live show (week of April 6th in) Orlando Florida

Scroll to bottom and read "Thats some cup of coffee"....the author is calling it ANOTHER razor/razorblade model .

So "passive" tags are currently 7-15 cents per unit, as per this page:

http://www.rfidjournal.com/faq/20/85

And the goal is to get the in-quantity price down to 5 cents:

http://www.rfidjournal.com/faq/20/84

With GMCR's clout and the kind of quantity they'd be looking at (a billion K/V-cups per year after ramp-up, or more?) that price point ought to be easily reachable. We're looking at an extra buck per box, and I have a feeling the "sexiness" of the RFID feature would easily justify that premium. I know I would certainly be happy to pay that to have my Vue brewer automatically tweak the settings to optimize each beverage we put through it...

A little more about "passive" RFID tags

And Here: Read the last paragraph that explains why some companies will not be able to follow GMCR into RFID

Has a list of partners been released for the Rivo? I'd be curious to find out if some of the higher-end producers are signed up to make espresso pods.

I remember an article a few months ago about La Colombe Torrefaction wanting to make their Lyon blend available, (the blend itself was made in charitable conjunction with Leonardo DiCaprio), and could be a great selling point for the Rivo.

I would hope that a GMCR/Lavazza joint venture would produce a brewer which had the quality of the Lavazza Blue and would use primarily Lavazza and GMCR coffees. Assuming that the reviews of the coffees and espressos was as high as those for the Lavazza Blue and the price was reasonable I would certainly give very strong consideration to purchasing the machine.
I find it interesting that so far I have not yet seen a review of the Verismo by a competent coffee reviewer. Is it perhaps that they would rather not say anything about it to avoid panning it?

Here's a review (and video) at Single Serve Espresso:

That is not a review. That is just a demo. No discussion at all about the taste nor even the appearance which looks very weak. That is about as useful as the "review" by the woman who commented that the red version looked sexy. I want a comparison with real barista espresso and with the Nespresso, CBTL and Lavazza machine espressos.
